PPF vs Ceramic Coating: What Is the Difference?

This is the single most common question we hear at the studio. Both PPF and ceramic coating are described as 'paint protection', but they work in completely different ways and are not direct substitutes.
What each one actually is
Paint Protection Film
A physical urethane film, roughly the thickness of a business card corner, applied over the panel. It is a barrier you can touch.
Ceramic coating
A liquid silica-based chemistry that cures into a very thin, hard, glossy layer bonded to the clear coat. It is measured in microns and is far thinner than film.
Protection
PPF is the only one of the two that meaningfully resists stone chips and physical impact. Ceramic coating adds chemical resistance and some scratch resistance against wash-induced marring, but it will not stop a stone from chipping the bonnet.
Appearance
Ceramic coating is known for a deep, wet-looking gloss and strong water beading. Gloss PPF also enhances shine, and matte or satin PPF can change the finish entirely. Many owners apply a coating on top of PPF to get the best of both.
Maintenance
- Both make washing easier because dirt has less to hold on to
- Ceramic coating needs periodic top-ups or maintenance products depending on the system used
- PPF needs careful washing around edges and no aggressive chemicals or high-pressure jets at seams
Durability
Quality PPF carries manufacturer warranties measured in years — commonly five to fifteen depending on grade. Ceramic coatings vary widely by product and application; expect regular inspection and maintenance to keep performance at its best.
Cost
PPF costs more because it is a labour-intensive installation using a physical film. Ceramic coating is generally the more accessible option. Coverage area also matters: a front-end PPF kit is much less than a full-body wrap in film.
When to choose which
- Highway driving and stone-chip worry — PPF, at minimum on the front end
- Mainly city driving, want gloss and easy cleaning — ceramic coating
- Premium or performance car you plan to keep — full-body PPF, coating on top
- Tight budget on a new car — front-end PPF plus coating on the rest is a sensible split
