Gloss PPF vs Matte PPF: Which One Should You Choose?

Modern films come in gloss, satin and matte finishes. The protective layer is fundamentally doing the same job — the difference is what happens to light at the surface, and what that means for care.

Appearance

Gloss film is effectively invisible on a glossy car. It preserves the factory look and can slightly deepen the shine. Matte film changes the character of the car completely, giving a flat, low-reflection finish that suits dark and metallic colours particularly well. Satin sits between the two.

Maintenance

  • Gloss can be polished lightly by a professional and hides water spots better
  • Matte must never be polished or waxed with gloss products — it will create shiny patches
  • Matte needs matte-specific shampoos and shows fingerprints and oily marks more readily
  • Both benefit from prompt removal of bird droppings and insect residue

Protection

Impact and chip resistance are comparable within the same product line. Self-healing behaviour is usually stronger on gloss films; many matte films are designed to hold their texture rather than heal aggressively, so check the specific film with your installer.

Styling

Matte is a statement. It works beautifully on performance cars and dark colours, and it can also be used selectively — a matte bonnet or roof over a gloss body, for example. Gloss is the choice when you want the car to look exactly as it left the factory, only protected.

Who should pick what

  • Want factory look preserved, easy care — gloss
  • Want a distinctive finish and are happy to follow a stricter wash routine — matte
  • Want a middle ground with a soft sheen — satin
  • Frequently park outdoors in dusty areas — gloss is generally more forgiving

We keep sample panels at the BP Wraps studio so you can see all three finishes against your own paint before deciding.
