PPF Buying Guide: What Should You Check Before Choosing a PPF?

Two quotes for 'full-body PPF' can differ substantially, and the gap is rarely just margin. Here is what to compare so you are looking at like for like.

1. Film brand and grade

Ask for the specific brand and product line, not just 'imported film'. Manufacturers publish product ranges, and the grade determines clarity retention, self-healing and warranty.

2. Thickness and construction

Automotive films are built in layers — top coat, urethane body and adhesive. Thicker is not automatically better; conformability on curved bumpers matters just as much. Ask what the installer recommends for your panels and why.

3. Clarity and finish

Look at an installed sample under bright light, not just a swatch. Check for orange peel texture, haze and how the edges look on a curved panel.

4. Self-healing behaviour

Ask to see a demonstration on a sample: a light scratch should soften with warm water or heat. Confirm whether the same behaviour applies to the matte or satin version if that is what you are choosing.

5. Warranty and registration

• How many years, and what does it actually cover — yellowing, cracking, delamination?
• Is it a manufacturer warranty or only an installer promise?
• Is the warranty registered in your name, and do you receive documentation?
• What is the claim process, and who handles it locally?

6. Installer experience

Ask how long they have been installing, request to see recent work in person, and look specifically at edges, bumper corners and mirror caps. Those are the areas where skill shows.

7. Facility and process

A controlled, well-lit bay, proper decontamination and a clear curing plan are as important as the film. Ask how long the car will be with them — full-body work is a multi-day job.

8. After-sales support

Find out whether inspections, edge touch-ups and spot repairs are supported, and what a single-panel replacement would cost later if the car takes a hard hit.

9. Written quotation

Get panel-by-panel coverage in writing. 'Full body' should list exactly which panels, and whether items like door cups, boot lip and headlights are included.
