How to Maintain Your Car After PPF Installation

PPF is low maintenance, not no maintenance. A few sensible habits will keep the film clear and the edges tight for years.

The first few days

• Do not wash the car for about a week, so the adhesive can fully bond
• Small moisture pockets or a slight haze under the film are normal early on and usually clear as the film cures
• Avoid car covers and avoid parking under trees that drip sap
• Do not pick at edges, and never try to lift a lifted corner yourself — call the installer

Safe washing

• Use the two-bucket method with a pH-neutral shampoo and a clean microfibre mitt
• Wash in the shade, on a cool panel, top to bottom
• Rinse thoroughly so no shampoo dries on the surface
• Avoid automatic brush tunnels — spinning brushes are hard on film edges

Drying

Use a clean, plush microfibre drying towel or filtered air. Do not drag a dirty towel across the panel, and try not to let hard water dry on the surface as mineral spots can build up on film just as they do on paint.

Chemicals to avoid

• Strong solvents, thinners and petrol-based cleaners
• Highly alkaline or acidic wheel cleaners on filmed panels
• Abrasive polishes and compounds, which can dull the top coat
• Wax or sealants containing petroleum distillates or dyes unless they are film-safe

Pressure washing precautions

A pressure washer is fine if used sensibly. Keep the nozzle at least 30 to 40 cm away, use a wide fan tip, and never aim directly at an edge or seam. A concentrated jet at close range can lift film that is otherwise perfectly bonded.

Periodic checks

Every few months, look over the edges, the wheel arch lips and the bumper corners. Remove bird droppings and insect residue promptly rather than letting them sit. If you spot lifting, contamination under the film or a damaged section, get it looked at early — spot repairs are far simpler than panel replacements.
